Hoysala vamsha huTtiddu: According to this tale Sala, a young student was directed by his teacher Sudatta Muni, who asked him to smash tiger (poy-sala i.e., "smash, oh Sala), when it rushed in the precincts of the temple of goddess Vasantika at Sosevur. Sala is said to have hit the ferocious tiger and killed it, winning thereby the appreciation and blessings of Guru, who commanded him to establish a kingdom. This account became so popular that it is narrated in all the elaborate Hoysala epigraphs, which describe the hero sala as the originator of the family. The event gained prominence that the figure representing the story of Sala attacking the tiger with a dagger, became the royal emblem of the family, and it is seen almost in every Hoysala temple

Vishnuvardhana's career of conquests began with an expedition against Gangavadi, which had been part of the Chola Kingdom and was being governed by Adigaiman chiefs of Tagadur. The Hoysala ruler sent his brilliant general, Gangaraja, who reached Talakad and demanded its surrender.

On the refusal to surrender the city, Gangaraja routed the Chola forces, lead by Adigaiman in the grim battle of Talakad. The Chola general with his two eminent associates, Damodara and Narasinga Verma suffered great humiliations.

Hoysala Art and Architecture
By constant explorations of the Archaeological Survey of Mysore, around ninety Hoysala temples have been discovered. They can be broadly classified according to the number of Vimana or tower they have – Ekakuta, Dwikuta, Thrikuta, Chatushkuta and Panchakuta.

The Chennakeshava Temple has one Vimana (Ekakuta), the Hoysaleshwara Temple of Halebid has two Vimanas (Dwikuta), the Keshava Temple of Somanathapur has three towers (Thrikuta), the Lakshmi Temple of Doddagaddavalli is a four-towered temple (Chatushkuta), and the Panchalingeshwara Temple of Govindanahalli has five Vimanas (Panchakuta).

However, the temples of Somanathapur, Belur and Halebid are generally acknowledged as the supreme representatives of the Hoysala tradition and architecture.

visnuvardhana was never an indeendent ruler. the imperial rastrakUtas were his masters. only vishnuvardana's descendents became independent of rashtrakuta oerlordship.

correct vishnuvardana was not an independent ruler[atleast for most the time].but the masters were not RastrakuTas but Chalukyas of KalyaNi[who claimed they were descendents of Chalukyas of Badami]
